Our initial consultation (~60mins) involves an in-depth discussion of your pet’s medical history, lifestyle and goals, then a thorough examination and assessment of their condition. A tailored treatment plan is made, and may include one or a combination of modalities depending on your pet’s personality and tolerance. There are no additional costs for other modalities used.

Follow up consultations (~20-30min) involve reassessing your pet’s health and how they have travelled since our last visit. It includes a physical examination, reassessment and acupuncture treatment session.

The number and frequency of sessions required depends on each individual patient and the underlying condition.

Traditional Acupuncture

Insertion of single-use thin sterile needles into selected acupuncture points. Needles are usually kept in for 15-30 minutes. Most pets will lay down and relax or fall asleep once the needles have been placed.

Aquapuncture

Injection of fluids (vitamin B12 or saline) using a hypodermic needle, into acupuncture points to provide extended stimulation and benefits. Great for dogs who may not tolerate traditional needling, or where sustained stimulation is required.

Moxibustion

Involves the warming of acupuncture points through the slow burning of a herb (Mugwort) above the skin over the point. A smokeless roll in used to reduce smell and smoke produced.

Electroacupuncture (Coming Soon)

An electric current is applied using to inserted acupuncture needles to help relax spasming muscles and re-establish nerve function when damage has occurred from nerve injury or spinal cord damage.

FAQs

How will my pet react?

Acupuncture is performed using single-use thin rounded end needles so there is no cutting edge unlike injection needles. These separate the skin and muscles rather than cutting them. There can be a brief period of sensitivity on placement of needles into sensitive areas, but once in place, most animals relax, and often will fall asleep during treatment.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

Please fill out a new patient form and ensure your pets medical history is provided at least 24hs prior to your appointment. Organise a quiet space with your pet's favourite blanket or bed to lay on. Don't worry if your pet is more active, I can work with them, wherever and however they are most comfortable. If possible, please take your dog for a walk or exercise prior to their treatment if their condition allows, as most dogs are more relaxed after. Feel free to have your pet's favourite treats ready if they are food-driven and relax better with treats.

How long will it take to notice an improvement?

Every pet is different when it comes to how quickly acupuncture will work. However, most clients notice a difference after just one treatment. Other times, it can take 3-5 sessions to get the most benefit from it. For this reason, I recommend to commit to at least three treatments to work out if acupuncture is the right option for your pet. As a general rule of thumb, chronic conditions require longer and may require intermittent lifelong treatment to help maintain comfort or control; whereas more acute conditions may completely recover and only need treatment for a couple months. It depends on the condition we are treating, and your pet’s tolerance to the sessions.

Do you offer herbal therapy?

Acupuncture is sometimes combined with herbal treatment to support the treatment goals of acupuncture, especially in cases where western medicine and treatment have been unsuccessful. Unfortunately, at this stage I do not offer herbal therapy.

Are there situations where acupuncture is not recommended?

Certain acupuncture points are not to be used during pregnancy as they can induce labour. Acupuncture is not used in aggressive/ malignant cancers as it increases blood flow which can increase tumour size and spread. I do not perform acupuncture on areas with an active skin infection and will refer you back to your regular vet for treatment if needed in the case of generalised/ severe skin disease. The efficacy of acupuncture can be reduced when steroids or sedatives have been administered. However, for some conditions, there may still be some benefits to acupuncture treatment despite this.

Is acupuncture safe?

It is one of the safest therapies utilized if practiced by a competent veterinary acupuncturist. Occasionally a patient’s condition may temporarily worsen over the first 12-24hrs before improving. Acupuncture works by naturally balancing the body’s own system of healing and involves no pharmaceuticals. This means complications or side effects rarely, if ever, occur.

What should I expect following a treatment?

I recommend a quiet restful afternoon following our session, so avoid excessive exercise or stress, so the body can focus on healing. Many cases will improve significantly over the first few days of acupuncture treatment. Sometimes there is no obvious change in symptoms but your pets may appear more energetic or brighter. A few cases will worsen over the first 12-24 hours before improving rapidly. It depends on the individual patient. Most owners report their pet sleeps for several hours after acupuncture treatment, and some have an increased appetite shortly after treatment whilst others do not want to eat for the rest of the day. For some conditions, there is a gradual improvement with each session until the condition resolves. For more chronic conditions though, ongoing regular treatments may be required to maintain the effect.
